Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is a very viable option for dental patients who have a persisting fear of undergoing surgical dental procedures.

Dentophobia, or the extreme fear of dentists, is among the most common reasons why people from all ages and walks of life opt to refuse professional dental treatment. Consequently, this results to poor status of oral health and general wellbeing.

Dentophobia

Sedation dentistry, or dental sedation, allows for a more comfortable dental treatment in a relaxed environment. Sedation dentistry does not only help the patient get more comfortable in undergoing the procedure, it also enables the dentist to carry out the procedure more efficiently as they get greater cooperation from the patient.

It is important to note that dental sedation is not specifically designed to send you to sleep. And while sensations of drowsiness and sleepiness might occur, dental sedation is prepared to make you relaxed and comfortable.

Types Of Dental Sedation
that we offer at Teeth Plus Clinic:

Oral Conscious Sedation

as its name suggests, comes in the form of oral sedatives which relieve sensations of anxiety and stress. Oral conscious sedation keeps you conscious enough so you can answer any question and follow any instruction given to you by your dentist Annandale.

Patients who are sedated with oral sedatives often feel very drowsy,  and as a result, remembers very little of the procedure.

Inhalation Sedation

otherwise referred to as nitrous oxide or laughing gas, is arguably the most popular form of dental sedation. This is mainly because laughing gas takes only five minutes worth of inhaling to take full effect. Additionally, unlike oral sedatives, laughing gas can be readily administered in incremental doses until the desired effect is achieved. Similar with oral conscious sedation, nitrous oxide typically leaves patients feeling very drowsy to the point of sleep.

Intravenous Sedation

also referred to as IV sedation, is specifically prepared to simulate the sensation of sleep. While ultimately remaining conscious, the sensation of sleep is often a little too overwhelming that the patient remembers very little of the procedure. Administered through the vein, as its name suggests, among the most common sedatives used in intravenous sedation include benzodiazepene and propofol.

Local Anaesthetic

essentially blocks localised pain signals, specifically pain signals on the site of the dental procedure. For additional comfort, an anaesthetic gel or numbing spray is applied to the site even before the local anaesthetic is injected. Patients who are under local anaesthesia are fully conscious, without feeling any discomfort that comes with procedure.
