Inlays and Onlays

Often consisting of gold, porcelain, and composite materials, inlays and onlays are dental restorations used to repair the function and integrity of a tooth. Inlays and onlays are often used to repair a tooth that is essentially too damaged to support traditional dental fillings.

Unlike dental fillings, in which the filling material is directly applied and set onto the broken tooth, inlays and onlays are instead fabricated in a dental laboratory, fitted into the dental cavity, and then cemented into place.

Inlays and onlays are functionally similar dental restorations that cover different proportions of a tooth. Inlays fit into the centre of the tooth surface. While onlays, often referred to as a partial crown, extensively cover the entire biting surface of the tooth. It is your dentist in Annandale who evaluates if an inlay or an onlay is most suitable for your tooth. It is also your dentist who evaluates which filling material works best.

The Procedure

Inlay-and-onlays treatment in Annandale usually takes two appointments to complete. Both are carried out using similar procedures.

The first appointment is usually dedicated to cleaning and preparing the tooth. This means that your dentist drills to remove any damage or decay present on the tooth. After which your dentist prepares your tooth by installing a temporary restoration that protects your teeth until your inlay and onlay restorations are ready.

It is also during the first appointment that your dentist takes a mould or impression of your tooth. This mould is sent off to a dental laboratory where a custom-made dental inlay or onlay is fabricated to perfectly fit your tooth.

During your second appointment, your dentist removes the temporary restoration. After which, your dentist makes sure that your new inlay and onlay restoration fit your tooth flawlessly. It is only when the inlays and onlay are fitted perfectly that your new restorations are cemented into place with a strong dental adhesive. Your dentist then polishes your new restorations to make sure they just don’t feel good, but look good as well.
