Fissure Sealants

Fissure sealants generally consist of protective plastic coating that protects the teeth from cavities and tooth decay.

Prepared to match the natural colour of your teeth, fissure sealants are most often applied on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, medically referred to as molars. Once applied, fissure sealant is permanently coated on your teeth, where it lasts for a number of years.

Why Does Your Child Need Fissure Sealants?

The chewing surfaces of your molars, or back teeth, naturally have small grooves or fissures that extend deep into the tooth structure. These grooves are very difficult to clean as these are often inaccessible to the traditional toothbrush.

As a result, minuscule food particles are often lodged into these grooves, thereby making them ideal breeding grounds for mouth-dwelling-enamel-attacking-tooth-decay-causing bacteria.

Fissure sealants, as its name suggest, seal off these dental grooves, By doing so, fissure sealants prevent food particles from getting in.

What Happens During Sealant Application?

Before fissure sealants are applied onto dental surfaces, your dentist in Annandale first checks for any signs of tooth decay. Most of the procedure mainly consist of cleaning and drying the teeth, preparing the solution, and coating the sealant onto dental surface. No drilling and no injection are involved in fissure sealant application, thereby making it virtually pain-free.
